23 November 1908 — San Antonio Palace, Malta
Monday. 23rd [November 1908]. I went into Valletta in the motor with the Dss & Myles & I got out at Cook’s office that I might enquire about the road in Sicily to return to Rome. I found that the railways, owing to the late rains, are still interrupted & that there is no boat this week direct to Naples. We went from there to a small antiquity shop kept by a Neapolitan where we did not find anything we cared to buy so we went on to the Palace to rejoin the Dss & found her in the Ball room discussing the eternal question of the decorations wh seems no nearer being solved than when I first arrived here. We got back to San Antonio to lunch & afterwards went in the motor to the Marsa & I accompanied them while they played golf so that I might get some exercise. We were at tea in the Connaught’s sitting room when it was announced that Lady Blunt had come to call on me– I received her in the drawing room & the Dss sent the tea in there for her. Myles joined us there. Sir J. Blunt was Cons. Genl at Salonika where we were at Consple. After dinner we drove in to Valletta to hear La Bohème of Puccini at the Theatre Royal. It is the first time I have heard it—& enjoyed the music which is very pretty & it was well given. Ravaglia sang well & she is a good actress. The story is sad & it is always dreadful to have a dying scene acted. It is too like real life & its sorrows.
