30 November 1908 — San Antonio Palace, Malta
Monday. 30th [November 1908]. A very busy day. In the afternoon the Duke & Dss took me out in the motor to Notabile & on to the village of Rabat to see the remains of the Roman Villa there. We went on to the Church where is the soi disant prison of St Paul in the crypt of the church. From there to see the catacombs of which there are at least 2. We were accompanied by Dr Zammit the Director of the Museum whom T.R.H. had invited to accompany us show us the things most worth notices. After these catacombs he took us to some much nearer Valletta which have been lately discovered & were originally dug out some 4000 years BC as temples for some strange worship. There are remains of rude paintings on the walls. The shapes of the chambers are oblong. At a later date these temples had been used as burial places. It is touching to see the excavations for a family—husband wife & even a baby. It was past 5 before we returned to San Antonio. I had to put up my bags &c. Dined alone at 7—the Duke & Dss of Connaught came & sat with me a bit & then I went off with Myles to town in the motor to embark in the steamer for Syracuse which started at 8. The Duke’s launch conveyed me & Baker from the shore to the steamer & Myles remained with me till the last moment. I saw him return to shore with regret. He is such a dear fellow so kind & affectionate. After remaining on deck to see the harbour with all its bright lights wh made a pretty scene I went below to my cabin as soon as we got into the open sea & slept till morning when I found myself at Syracuse.
