1 December 1908 — Syracuse
Tuesday. 1st December [1908]. The British Consul kindly came on board my steamer before 7 a.m. & conveyed me to the Hotel where I rested a bit & had tea. At 9.30 he returned from his office & I took a carriage & we went sightseeing—to the catacombs, the Catomia & to an Antiquity shop. We returned to the Hotel & lunched at 12 & then Mr Lobb accompanied me to the station & saw me off for Messina by the 1 o’cl train. Owing to the late bad weather in Sicily the railway lines had been much spoilt—but now all was repaired except in one place where a bridge right down on the sea shore had not been rebuilt & we had to get out of the carriage & walk about 100 yds where we found another train waiting for us. It was a lovely evening. By the time we reached Messina it was dark but she looked more lovely than ever with her myriad of electric lights. We crossed the straits in the ferry boat & at St Giovanni were lucky eno’ to get places in the sleeping car for Rome.
