2 December 1908 — En route to Rome
Wednesday. 2nd [December 1908]. We arrived at Rome abt 1 & sending Baker to 2 Via Gaeta where we are staying I drove straight to the Embassy expecting to see the Egertons just before they started this eveng for Cannes. Last night at Naples a letter from Elsie Cassis was given to me in the sleeping car. She said she & her husband had suddenly been sent for to Messina on business but they begged we would go to their house in Rome just the same—well on arriving at the Embassy I was told that the Ambassador was very ill in bed & there was no thought of his being able to leave. I went up stairs—found the whole house dismantled & the Egertons living in the far corner of it—the rooms I had generally inhabited called the Royal rooms. I found Olga looking very worried. She told me that Sir Edwin had got blood poisoning in one leg from infection caused by cutting a corn on his foot. His temperature 103º & he was in danger. I remained there till eveng when Olga Egerton went to Via Gaeta with me to dine– She left early & I went early to bed—for I was tired & I was glad of a comfortable quiet sleep.
