2 January 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 2nd [January 1909]. I went out in the morning with Nora & Baker to Chitarin’s shop & bought a large quantity of material for making sheets—shirts & pillow cases. Over twenty English ladies came in the afternoon to help to cut it out & work at it. Baker & Nora cut out the stuffs in the dining room on the dinner table– Others sat sewing in the long hall & it was a busy scene. Mr Montalba happening to come in I got him to help to give the ladies tea. Many remained till after 6 & then carried their work home to finish & promised to buy more material & to continue to work. Mr Spaida came in saying he had heard about our work & he would like a pattern of what was required & he would set his servants to work. In fact every one was anxious & eager to help & I think we shall make up a good number of things to send away on Thursday by the “Manin” a steamer wh is to carry things to the seat of the earthquake– Mr Brown & Mr Woods dined with us in the little room on this upper floor. I went this morng to see Angela & got a scolding from her for having offered to go with Mme Pezzè– I had hoped no one wd have known—but in Venice there is no possibility of a secret being kept. Angela said it was a ridiculous idea that I should have killed myself &c &c. I calmed her as best I could & said my offer had not been accepted so there is an end of it.
