6 January 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 6th [January 1909]. Worked all day as yesterday. Received a notice from the Committee of the Red Cross here that I had been made Hon. associate of the Society. I wrote to Nela telling her she could come out here if she likes as I shall not move away for some time. How can I do so now I am in this work? Still splendid weather tho’ cold. Bright sunshine. It is decided that all the work I have collected here to send away by the “Manin” should remain for the care of the refugees when they arrive. I worked on for a couple of days more—many of the English colony coming to help– I had a very bad cold & cough & at last had to send for the Dr & keep my bed while Nora Hallé syperintended the workers & Sra Pezzè Pascolato came to see me to tell me what was going on. I had a slight attack of influenza with bronchitis wh made me feel very ill & wretched & I also fretted at being laid up while there was so much to do—but there was no help for it. However within the 10 days of the beginning of the work of the English Committee we had ready prepared 100 mattrasses & pillows & a lot of shirts besides 180 shawls I had bought at a wholesale place.
