5 January 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 5th [January 1909]. Mrs Royon came again this morning to cut out garments. Nora Hallé went with Sigra Malagola to the requiem at St Mark’s for the souls of the C.M. disaster. In afternoon Nora & I worked in the dining room & were joined by some ladies, Iduna Belmondo, Sra Rietti Stucky, Miss Jesse Allen &c who all worked well. I received a telegram from the Sindaco asking me to be present at a meeting at the Municipality at 9 this evening—so leaving Nora Hallé to receive any guests that might arrive I went there & at the door of Ca’ Farsetti I met Sra Pezzè Pascolato & we went in together & found we were the only ladies at a meeting held by the authorities to confer about taking charge of 1000 refugees from the South. There was much discussion & Dr Giordani spoke at length combatting the idea that any idlers should be received. It was decided that only women children & wounded should be accepted & a Committee of men was appointed & Sra Pezzè & I should join it to represent the women & that 250 should be sent at a time. This settled we returned home– I found only Bss Haan & her girl & Mr Hardcastle had arrived at home in my absence & so as they did not remain long we got to bed early.
