3 April 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 3rd [April 1909]. I went to the Mass at St Marks for the soul of Baron Reinelt wh was put off from 1st on acct of the Bss not being well—but she was unable to go today. The wind was so high, a wet cold Bora, that I had to go on foot. I went from [there] to sit with her a bit. The mass was celebrated at the altar of the Madonna– It was picturesque– I looked on with silent wonder. The priest looked a good old man & was reverent, but a service whispered & gabbled & the bowing &c &c does not seem to be impressive or right. Hallam Murray & Mr Ernest George arrived at 5 by the train de luxe from Eng: to stay with me. Lady Edith Drummond also came to stay. She was travelling with Lady de Ros & they parted company & Lady E. had nowhere to go so I took her in. She is a nice young woman–
