14 April 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 14th [April 1909]. Mr Ernest George left at 11 a.m. for London. At 12 the Kaiser of Germany arrived in Venice in forma privata. The Hellmans, Mr Byard, his friend Mr Holt—Misses Chaffey & Christie & Sigr Malagola came to witness the procession from my balcony. The Emp. & family were in the state barge rowed by many men of the Hohenzollern– There were sundry launches Italian & German & police boats. After they had just gone by one saw the Empress call the Kaiser’s attention to my house on wh he turned round & saluted. The Bülow party passed in a gondola with 3 rowers in white summer costumes & waved their handkerchiefs as they went by to us. The day was fine but the wind cold. I hear that Countess Morosini begged Lady Radnor who has taken the 1st floor of her palace, not to put out the English flag on her balcony as it is not fitting to have any but the Italian flag flying from her palace! What monstrous impertinence! I think it was weak of Lady R. to consent to such a thing. When the Kaiser had arrived Mrs Hellman & Mr Byard had a consultation about the concert they are going to get up & the plan begins to take a definite form. Went out at 3 to see Angela Reinelt. Ola joined me there & we went to see Mrs Curtis whom we found at home. From thence we went over to the Giudecca. Ola left me there & went for a row in the sandolo. I paid a visit to the Edens in their garden which is lovely with daffodils & spring flowers. I went in to the hospital & then to the Zattere to see Mrs Eram. She talked over her affairs & offered to give all her furniture for the benefit of our hospital. Trombini called at 7 & I told him of our concert plan & set him to work on it. Canon Ragg dined but left directly after. The rest went out with Sigra Malagola & Sra Caccia Guerra to hear the serenata for the Kaiser. I went early to bed–
