13 April 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 13th [April 1909]. I walked out at 11 a.m. Called to see Da Laura at the Britannia & saw also Pss Bülow & had a chat. Da L. promised to come & stay with me– The Emperor arrives tomorrow morning & will lunch with Css Morosini on 15th who is in high delight. The Pss says the Css informed her on meeting her in the street that the Emperor will be here tomorrow!! The Pss says that the Emperor is not the least in love with the Css—but he is a man of habits & has now got the habit of coming here to see the Css after Easter & everyone knows he will do so & the rest of his year is mapped out in this way. I went on to the Victoria Hotel to see Angela & found her much disturbed at an impertinent remark of the Morosini about me—against whom she warned me. She says the M. pretends to be pious but likes to make the world think that the Emperor is her lover. The Kaiser flatters himself that he has persuaded her to read her Bible & thinks she is the only Italian R.C. who reads it—that the priests forbid their flocks to do so. After lunch Ola & I went out in gondola for an hour & then I came in & rested. In the evening I had a very full reception– Lots of the fashionable world came—all loud in praise of this house which I must say looks very pretty when lighted up at night—so much so that I am surprised at it myself & hardly understand how it came about. I had hoped that Mrs Hellman would sing & Mr Byard also but was disappointed. Before the end of the evening these 2 suggested that they should get up a concert here in aid of the English hospital & they held a consultation on the subject & promised to think abt it.
