12 April 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 12th [April 1909]. Lady Edith Drummond decided suddenly that she must leave for England so we telephoned to Cook’s for her ticket & got her off by the 2 o’cl train. At 3 I went out in search of the Hellmans to take them to the Edens to introduce them but they were not in so I went off alone & just saw the Edens to explain matters. I went into the Hospital for a short time & then hurried home to meet Oscar & to take him to the Thedansant at the Fenice got up for a charity. The band of the Hohenzollern played—all Venice was there & Oscar enjoyed it. There was a cotillion which was pretty—the last figure the electric lights were put out & people danced with Japanese inflammable fire sticks in their hands wh sparkled in a very pretty manner. We got home just in time for dinner. Mme de Bunsen and her brother Mr Waddington dined with us & the former told us she was about to publish a book called 3 Legations on which Hallam Murray gave her some advice. He told her it was important she should put a preface to it as it was useful to the reviewer to know in a nutshell what the book was about.
