11 April 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 11th [April 1909]. Easter Sunday. We all went to service in the morning. The church was very full—the flowers nicely arranged by Ola– Afterwards I went to see Angela Reinelt & had a little chat with her before coming home to lunch. Afterwards I went to call on the Malagolas at the Archivio di stato & they were at home with their friend Sra Canareggio. I persuaded the Malagolas to go out with me & took them in gondola to the Piazza where the band of the Hohenzollern was playing & we met Ola & Oscar– Leaving the H.’s there I came home—& started again at 6 for San Daniele to assist at the little fête we gave to the profughi. One of their party is a pastry cook & he had made us some Sicilian sweets cakes &c & the party sat down to a supper—eggs & bread & marsala & cakes & were very happy. I sat at the table of the old women & eat with them much to their delight– The President, Sr Castellani was with us & made an appropriate little speech & one of the profughi said civil things & proposed several envivas & there was much clapping of hands & merriment. Countess Foà Mocenigo was there & I brought her back with me as she had no gondola. She is a nice young woman with a rather abrupt manner & talked sensibly– She told me of a practical joke done here on 1st how someone had sent round a notice to all the ladies of the approaching arrival of a celebrated dressmaker—that they all went to the place indicated & found it was a hoax. She thought it was very amusing—to me it seemed very stupid—but we both agreed that it was harmless.
