12 June 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 12th [June 1909]. At 7 a.m. Ola received an express from her sister Alice at Florence saying that Hallam was seriously ill & begging her to go there. We managed to get Ola off by the 10 a.m. train. Signor Castellani came to meet Css Giustina Valmarana to talk over the affairs of the profughi we had sent back to Messina & for whom the wooden sheds wh were to be erected, are not yet even begun. We decided that the President of the Tribunal should be requested to allow Judge Castellani to go to Messina himself to look into the matter. The son of Duke Canevaro who had been sent by the head Committee to see the work is drunk of a morning. Sig. Cataldo whom we sent on our side is drunk at night! What a state of things. Giustina knows the President & offered to go & ask him abt letting Avv. Castellani go. After tea I went to the Britannia Hotel to call on the French Ambassadress Mme Barrère & there met the Canevaros on the same errand. Invited him to tea tomorrow. Saw also Blanche Lady Lindsay who is staying at the same hotel—also old Baroness Ritter from Trieste a dear old lady very pleasant & well bred– I knew her thro’ Angela Reinelt.
