Saturday. 19th [June 1909]. Spent the day making bead chains for Da Laura. In the afternoon a gentleman called who intrigued me. He spoke Italian with an accent & English also– he turns out to be an American of German origin Kaupe by name & has settled at Pallanza on the Lago Maggiore where he has a lovely villa—collects pictures has fine things. He is much interested in a soi disant replica he has lately bought of a Leonardo. He stayed some time chatting. | |
