5 July 1909 — Carlsbad | |
Monday. 5th [July 1909]. Sad day. Began drinking the waters. While at breakfast at Pupps’ saw old Mr Cartwright staggering by. I ran out & stopped him. He says he is the oldest patient here having come regularly for 50 years. Indeed the Municipality have presented him with an address on the subject. In the afternoon he came to pay me a visit & mounted to my 3rd floor in the lift. He talked in a very interesting way– Said he had lost 3 of his best friends in the last 6 weeks—Mr Bliss of Rome—Sir Rowland Blennerhassett & . He says also that he had a desperate letter from Lord Fitzmaurice who takes leave of him saying he has not slept for two months & it cannot last much longer. I asked if he gathered that Bülow was going to resign his Chancellorship. He said he had little doubt of it & that the Kaiser had never forgiven him in his heart for all he has gone thro’ this last year. Mr Cartwright remained talking for about an hour & I saw him drive safely away. He is so very lame & infirm one wonders how he dare going about alone. Went for a walk with Baker after tea & was caught in heavy thunderstorm & had to come home in a cab. Sup. at Hannover. Letter from Avv. Franco saying that the house near the hospital has now gone up to £5500 & is to be bought by a blacksmith! He advises me to give up the affair. | |
