1 August 1909 — Garry Hill, Bagenalstown, County Carlow
Sunday. 1st August [1909]. We drove in the motor to service at 11 in the morning to Fenagh church. Rector a Mr Neville a pale thin young man, brother to the wife of the estate agent at Bessborough. One day we drove over to Myshall to see the beautiful new church lately built by a Mr Depere in memory of his daughter. It is a tiny imitation of the Cathedral at Salisbury—stands beautifully on a wooded slope & being white & new & spotless it gives one the same feeling one has in seeing the Taj—of a lovely pearl. This will probably wear off with the damp Irish climate & it will be like other buildings—only always a lovely design. Unfortunately the church is not wanted—there is an old one 20 yards away wh suffices for the small congregation of about 20 people. Neither is it completed as to fittings, tho’ in the side chapel there is a lovely statue to the daughter & the tomb of the wife.
