11 September 1909 — Salce, Belluno | |
Saturday. 11th [September 1909]. Now began the quiet even life at Salce. I had my early tea in my room—after it I betook me to reading Dante—choosing the Purgatorio. Abt 11 I went down & out to chat with Carrie while she gardened; or Mr Eden while he sketched. We lunched at 12 & during that meal the post came in bringing papers & news from the outside world. We read them Carry & I in the big sala after lunch & then I read aloud to Carry—this year our book is the Soul of Spain by Havelock Ellis– During this time Mr E. took his siesta. At 4.30 we had tea in the Gazebo overlooking the lovely valley—then we took a drive or walk. Sometimes we drove over to Sacchieva to see the Wiels—sometimes Mme Wiel came to tea with us & we walked part of the way home with her. Occasionally a motor car brought a couple of visitors & on | |
