10 September 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 10th [September 1909]. Had a visit from our new chaplain Mr Price who has come to Venice since I left in July. He wanted to talk over the affairs of our sailor’s Institute as the Royon family have decided to leave & no one has yet been found to replace him. I told him I wd leave the matter in his hands & that of the committee & thought they should do the work they had been in the habit of leaving to me. He seemed to enter into my views & promised to occupy himself with the matter– Sr Malagola came to see me & says he has nearly finished his book on the “Lido” at which he has been working hard all the summer. The work has done him a world of good & he is now bright & energetic & has recovered his “neurasthenia” & settled down to family life as his wife told me when she came to the station to see me off to Belluno. These Italians, even the clever ones, are strangely like children in many ways. I left Venice by a 2 o’cl train & reached Belluno before 7 where Carry Eden met me & drove me up to their villa at Salce. At Venice there was a heavy scirocco but here it was warm but cool. Mr Eden now abt 84 & always a great invalid is a wonderfully interesting old man—sketches beautifully lying out on a long chair– When he stands up supporting himself on 2 sticks he has a fine tall figure. We dined at 7.30 & to bed at 9.30.
