30 September 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 30th [September 1909]. Baron & Bss Trauttenberg came to call in the morning. He is an Austrian diplomat retired & living at Rome. Nice man—she clever but rather wearisome. The Watts came to tea & also Mrs Curtis & old Genl de Horsey & Mr Whitaker & Genl Sartorius & daughter. Mme Bompard & Emilienne payed me a surprise visit. She has grown up into a handsome girl & very taking. The poor old Genl more blind than ever said he has much worried at his sister Lady Cardigan having published his “Memories.” He said “my sister is a clever woman, but she always was a fool!” I told him that it was probably very amusing & she was now so old, that all the people she wrote of must have passed away. He said “yes but she may have hurt their family’s feelings. I have not seen the book.” My cook Sear arrived from London tonight bringing a new kitchen maid with her, so now I am ready to entertain people.
