28 September 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 28th [September 1909]. Got up late being tired & headachy from the heavy scirocco. At 2 p.m. Avv: Franco called to report on the lawsuit being brought against me by the man who has the house next the hospital who says we have built the new wards 10 cent. too near him. It is a case of chantage & we are to fight it out. Of course the man thought he would oblige me to pay him a large price to settle the suit & I would also buy the broken down house of him. Franco asked me if I would go with him one day before the magistrate to make certain declarations on the subject. Later I went over to the hospital to see the matron Chaffey. She has not many patients just now. Dr van Someren & Dr W.                no longer bring us in their patients since the explanations wh took place before I left—as to their treatment of those they brought in. Dr Van. S. nearly starved one of them to death. Mrs G. F. Watts & her adopted daughter Mrs Michael Chapman dined with me– The former is the widow of the painter a charming woman. Young Jekyll came to see me in the evening & I sent them to their respective hotels in my gondola.
