2 October 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 2nd [October 1909]. I was sitting reading after lunch when a young man walked in whom after the first surprise I found to be Mr Ben Fandell Phillips, Lady Pirbrights nephew. On hearing his aunt was at the door in the gondola, I went down to see her & sat there on the Grand Canal talking to her. She was very cordial—stouter than ever, her curly head with bright red locks—beautiful jewelry—a gleaming set of teeth. She is full of life & is very kind to me. She was accompanied by the faithful McGinn—her secretary—brother to her maid. She asked me to dine wh I did—at the Grand Hotel. She has a fine apartment in the piano nobile of the old Venetian palace now an Albergo. Met there Mrs Bethune—also Ct & Css Vera Brazzà. The hotel seems full.
