15 October 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 15th [October 1909]. I had a tremendously hard days work. All the morning people came one after the other, Mr Price, Mr Montalba, Mr & Mrs Lorimer to bid me good bye as they are leaving Venice & so on all the morning till lunch time. Mrs Whitaker also– After lunch I took Alice & Hallam out in gondola to see the Hospital—from there we went to see the Montalbas & there saw Sir Luke & Lady Fildes. I left the Murrays to go home in gondola & set off on foot. On the iron bridge I met Mr James & we walked together to Hotel de Rome where I saw an Australian friend of Nela Du Cane’s Miss McConnel. Her friends Mr & Mrs Dodd were in need of a Dr so I recommended them an Italian. Then Mr James asked me to go with him to tea at the Piazza so we went to Florians– From there to the Tracys to ask after the invalids & so home– I went to dine with Mr Whitaker a little parte carré, his friend Mr Joseph & Mr James. In the evening Mr Whitaker played the violin to Mr James’ accompaniment. A Mr Emmerson with a big bass voice sang. He has been studying at Florence & is trying at Milan to get an engagement on the stage.
