18 October 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 18th [October 1909]. Mrs Whitaker, mother of the young man settled here, came to see me. A charming gentle woman. Directly after lunch Avv. Franco called for me & I took him in gondola to the Tribunals to make a declaration over a lawsuit being brought against me. The judge sat at a table with his clerk– We the Avv. & his clerk sat in a row opposite him. I signed a paper & then we went off. I left the Avv. at his door & then went on to see Mrs Curtis to ask her if she could understand a letter I had received this morning. Gertie Ker Seymer wrote to ask from Lady Caitigan whether it is true that old Genl de Horsey is going to be married! We agreed that it was impossible & wondered how the report arose. We know he is always ailing and getting daily more blind but he has not given any reason to believe such a report. He is also very hard up which is also a reason against it. From there I went to the Tracys & found the invalids going well. I took Mrs Tracy some wax that she might amuse herself modelling as she has a talent for it & has nothing to do, so it will be a good employment. Came home & then walked to the Sailor’s Institute to be at the Committee meeting at 5. Mr Woods & Montalba walked back with me– After dinner Alice & I played double patience & the rest went to Mr Whitakers to spend the eveng.
