19 October 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 19th [October 1909]. We all breakfasted downstairs together at 9 a.m. The Bishop of Oxford (Paget) came to see Hallam & to look at the pictures here. He is a tall gaunt ugly man with a big red nose, but his manner is charming. I invited him to come to lunch tomorrow to meet the Bp of Gibraltar. At 3.30 I went out with Corise in the sandolo that Alice has hired & left my gondola for their use. We went to the hospital to show her round—& then took a walk in the Eden’s garden, where the roses are still plentiful & the chrysanthemums beginning to come out. Thence we went to the Piazza where flags were flying & a band preparing to play. So we sat under the arcades at Florian’s & ordered tea. After a long time the band struck up the marcia reale & then there was such a long pause that we gave up the hope of hearing more music & we came home. No one seemed to know what fête was being celebrated—later we found it was the anniversary of the entry of the Italian troops in 1868. In the evening I had my usual reception & a great many foresti came.
