20 October 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 20th [October 1909]. Giuseppe went off at 7.30 a.m. in gondola to pick up Mr Price the chaplain & to proceed to the steamer just arrived from Fiume on which the Bishop of Gibraltar was arriving. They brought him back to breakfast & Mr Price remained for that meal– The Bishop looked very unwell, & was suffering from an affection in the throat so that his voice is much affected. He asked to be left quiet all the morning to rest & he retired till lunch time. In the afternoon I took him out for a short row in gondola & we came in before sunset. In passing the Zattere we saw Mr Montalba & took him into our boat & brought him home to tea. After that when the Bishop had again retired to his room & went to the Hellmans with Mr Montalba. He was too nervous about infection—& would not go in to the house so we parted. After sitting a little while with Mrs Tracy & hearing her daughters were both better I came home. We dined at 7.15 & then I took Corise and Nela to the Concert of the Sailor’s Institute. The sala was crammed with seamen & there were many ladies & gentleman—& a very varied programme was gone thro’. Pss de Polignac played the piano, Mr Bond & H. Johnston sang, Miss Bowyer read a story, &c &c & a professional American singer a Miss Schafer with a tremendous voice sang twice & called forth great applause. Tea & cakes were served in the middle of the entertainment & the affair lasted till past 11 p.m. Great regret that the Bishop was unable to be present. He looks so ill it makes one anxious. He feels acutely the loss of his wife this summer & talked touchingly of it. Miss Schafer & Mr C. Walther (who accompanied her on the piano) suggest that we should get up a public concert for the Institute at wh they will offer their services.
