25 October 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 25th [October 1909]. A sudden cold wet day. There was a partial strike here today—on account of the execution & the coming of the Czar to Italy. However private gondolas went about & the P. steamers were running. The gondoliers at the traghetti were supplanted by water police & the whole movement was a fiasco. Very few of the workmen knew the reason of the strike, some said “on acct of the coming of the Emperor of Germany” others because a Spanish ship was here– A small boy was heard shouting “Abasso it Governo! Viva la sciopero! Viva la canaglia!! Olga Egerton arrived by 12 o’cl train from Lausanne to stay with me. I had not seen her since I left them at the Embassy at Rome. We went over to the Hospital after lunch but it rained hard & we had to hurry back. We went to 5 o’cl tea at Mr Whitakers & then home. Lighted fêtes for the 1st time.
