12 November 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 12th [November 1909]. The “Times” that came this morning repeats the same sad story of Monty’s sudden death at Sandringham while out with the King—no letter from Blanche—but the 2nd post brought one from Nellie Wyld & also from my sister Kate– I went out for a little while in the afternoon & walked in the Eden’s garden & got a large bouquet of roses & chrysanthemums—the last of the season I think as the gardener said there was a white frost last night. Still the weather is lovely. On my return I found a telegram from Blanche saying “Glad you are coming” so I decided to start on Sunday by the train de luxe. I sent for Mr Whitaker & told him I was going & he said he would advance his journey by 2 days & go with me to look after me. I telephoned to Cook to have my places kept—& so I settled to go—& think it is wise as I may be of use in a business way. The Malagolas came in the evening—everybody here has sent me kind notes & messages—but it is more than ever like a dream. Every English newspaper has nice accounts of dear Monty & appreciate his many talents. By the papers I learn that the funeral is tomorrow.
