11 November 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 11th November [1909]. Mrs Eden came in the morng to condole with me—having heard about dear Monty– The Egertons telegraphed to me. The 5 o’cl post brought the “Daily Mail”—& there I found the whole sad story—how Monty had gone to stay at Sandringham with the King & Queen to celebrate the King’s birthday—& had walked out with the shooters—& had fallen dead– At last I know the truth. I had guessed he had died of heart & am almost relieved it should not have happened while he was alone in his rooms in London—or in the middle of the night & he had no suffering. Dear boy—he was saved that & he was surrounded by friends who all liked him—& will be sad at losing him. I shall probably have letters tomorrow from Blanche. Malagola, Montalba, & Olga Mocenigo came also—all are kind & sympathetic– I went out in gondola for an hour—just for a change—to the hospital & back. Hallam is better & got up for a short time. Dr Vitali is satisfied with his progress.
