10 November 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 10th [November 1909]. I guessed but too well—he is dead. About 11 a.m. I got a telegram from Edward Bessboro’ “Monty died suddenly.” I had been putting my things together for packing ready to start home by 5 o’cl train & I saw at once it was of no use going– I could be of no help—& I could not bear to see him buried– The great big noble hearted, fine of stature—the dear brother is gone. He was looked up to by the whole family with adoration & admiration. To me he had always been good & after the death of my dear brother Augustus he had been my favorite brother—alas! & I missed seeing him while I was in London this summer—by a mere chance & at the time I had a superstitious feeling of fear about it. Later in the day I had a telegram from Dss of Somerset to whom I have let 3 Savile Row for a couple of months to say she would give back the house to me should I want it, but I cannot go– I should hardly be in time for the funeral & I could not bear it—besides Hallam is still unwell & I don’t like to leave Alice. Corise & Nela had gone off to Rome by the 9.50 train. Alice & I took an airing in the closed gondola– It was a lovely day—one wonders why the sun should shine so bright as tho’ one were not in trouble! but so it is.
