9 November 1909 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 9th [November 1909]. He is much better & Dr Vitali was satisfied but bids him keep his bed. I was worried about the nurse being here so I went off to see the Tracys & told Mrs Corse that we were going to send her back Nurse Christie. I found a great confusion & Mrs Corse much excited as the authorities were coming to disinfect the apartment this afternoon—the invalids being still in bed! It seems to be a monstrous & unnecessary thing to do. Alice had taken me to San Samuele in her sandolo & she took me home & carried off Nurse Christie at once & returned her to the Tracys to their great relief. This was all my morning’s work– I seem very idle. After lunch I returned to the Tracys & asked the old lady to come out for an airing with me in gondola. She was delighted & we went off to the Eden’s garden—& thence to the Hospital where we got a large bunch of chrysanthemums for the Tracy girls & I took Mrs T. back home & came home myself. Hallam continues better. Received in the evening—but not many people came. Mr & Mrs Davey were of the number. He talked very agreeably & I begin to get over my first disagreeable impression of him. I had just got into bed when a telegram was given me which says “Monty seriously ill” from Blanche. What does it mean? I fear the worst—& have telegraphed back to ask if I shall come. I cannot sleep– I am too anxious– I dare not think too much about it.
