1 January 1910 — Bessborough, Fiddown, County Kilkenny
Saturday. 1st January [1910]. Bessborough where I arrived on Wedy last to stay with Blanche my sister & Edward. I found here Arthur Du Cane, Jack & Irène Congrove, Marjory Skinner, Myles, Bertie—Diamond Ponsonby (daughter of Hon Arthur) aged 12—Onie’s 3 young children & little Ambrose Congrove– His parents left last night on a visit to England after dinner. Today I went to church with Blanche, Marjory & little Dom: & Kathleen Browne. I had a long kind telegram from Queen Margherita from Rome– “Milady Layart (she always spells my name wrong) Many hearty thanks for hearty wishes and for beautiful turguay (turkey I sent her a silver one) and amiable thoughts. My best & most friendly wishes of New Year for you.” I had also a telegram from Bss Reinelt at Venice & many letters—amongst them one from Marchesa Villamarina saying the Regina Madre was sending me a present. I did a lot of typing copying my mothers Journal for publication by Mr Lane– Took a drive with Blanche in the little poney cart & she went to see sick dependance. It was a very dull heavy hot day– We returned for tea & then after dark took a walk to the village post office & back. Typed again till dinner– The curate dined—not very interesting. We worked at putting together the puzzle wh has been going on since I came. A stupid amusement just now the rage & very engrossing.
