19 February 1910 — Brighton
Saturday. 19th [February 1910]. The wind had howled all night & one got little sleep. There was no getting out all today & we worked all the harder at opening drawers, destroying papers & letters, tearing up photographs &c &c. The man from Christie’s the London auctioneer came down with old Pollard the printseller & chose out what is to be conveyed to London for sale there. We were astonished to see how many good pieces of furniture he refused to take saying tho’ good there were not tip top so were not worth removing to London. There will be therefore a second very important sale at Brighton after the one at Christie’s. It was touching to see old Pollard going round admiring the fine prints, many of wh Monty had bought of him—regretting that they were going to the hammer. It is a gentleman in his ways the dear old man & is much attached to all our family.
