21 February 1910 — Brighton
Monday. 21st [February 1910]. The storm having abated Blanche & I took a walk in the morning round by Adelaide Terrace to see where Elaine Villiers had been living during the time her husband was M.P. for Brighton. He did not stand again at this last election & they have left Brighton. After luncheon I drove off to Hove to call on old Hormuzd Rassam, Henry’s companion at Nineveh. The maidservant on opening the door said “Have you come to play chess”—on my saying No—she said then you can’t come in. I bade her take up my name & I was sure Mr Rassam would see me. I had fallen on a chess club day wh was unfortunate. However Mr & Mrs Rassam received me in the dining room & tho’ he is over 80 & much bent I found him little changed & he has the same cheery laugh. This I told him & he answered “But you are changed!” which was trying and I could not get him to explain in what manner. I did not remain very long with him but drove back to Brunswick Sqr where Blanche & I went on in a taxi to Marine Parade to look at the outside of the house 130—where we had spent a season there in 1853—& we were all children. Arrived there we wanted to pay off our taxi & found that we had only gold in our purses—so we went into a chemist shop to make some trifling purchase & walked home having got change & paid the man. At night when turning out my pocket—lo! the purse was missing! & it had in it at least 5 sovereigns. I never expected to hear of it more.
