20 March 1910 — Rome | |
Sunday. 20th [March 1910]. I went to morning service with Sophy in the Eng. Church of Via Babuino– A new chaplain named Palms—an improvement on the old who died last year. Preached well extempore—perhaps quoted too much lay poetry. Coming out met Sir Rennell Rodd who said he was coming by & by to Venice. I said I hoped he would stay with me there & also Lady Rodd if she thought of coming. Lunched with the Franquevilles at our Hotel. In the afternoon I walked to Villa Malta to see Donna Laura who spends the afternoons there. I found her sitting out on a terrace in a sheltered place & remained with her a couple of hours chatting. She is always a delightful companion. Pss Bülow come to us for a moment so ordered tea to be served us there. Da Laura tells me that the reason of P. Bülows disgrace was that when the Kaiser during his long stay in England 2 years ago had made such a pasticcio he tried to make out he had done it all by Bülow’s advice– The Kaiser declared he had written to consult Bülow & had received letters from him in return—this correspondence Bülow denies the existence of. When the Kaiser was told this his answer was “What can you expect of a man who has lost his memory since the stroke he had in the chambers!” This afternoon I recd a note from Lady Rodd inviting me to go & finish my stay in Rome at the Embassy, & to lunch with them tomorrow. I thanked her & said I was leaving town tomorrow & was engaged to lunch with Da Laura. I went with the Franquevilles to dine with Mr Wyndham (1st secy of Embassy) & his sisters. They are living just opposite the Embassy. Very nice kind people. With them is a pretty daughter of Ld Leconfield a cousin. Mr Wyndham talked to me about the Anglo American Home of wh he is chairman– The Rodds will have naught to do with it & Mr Wyndham is much troubled. He appealed to me to help & asked if I had not a niece to recommend who could reorganize it as the present management is not satisfactory. I told him that if he would come & stay with me at Venice he could see Ola Du Cane & talk it over with her & I promised to go with him tomorrow to see the Home. | |
