21 March 1910 — Rome
Monday. 21st [March 1910]. Sophy & I started off before 10 to find a carriage to go to Mr Wyndhams. There being a strike of trams we wandered finding no botte to be had as there is such a run on them. So we returned to the Hotel & the porter found us one. We got rather late to the Embassy where we called for Mr Wyndham. The chancery servant Antonio welcomed me with effusion, as did those of the secretaries whom I knew, Col. Delmé Ratcliffe & Mr Erskine. They all feel the change of régime since the Egertons left—who were so easy going & hospitable. The Rodds are stiff & more common place—& the happy family feeling no longer exists. Mr Wyndham went with us on to the Home & the Misses Everett were very pleased to welcome us & took Sophy round the establishment. On leaving we went to the Bristol School of Archaeology at Palazzo Adescalchi to see Mrs Arthur Strong whom we were lucky eno’ to find there. She is now assistant to Mr Ashby & very useful in many ways to him & the students. Thence I went to have luncheon with Da Laura Minghetti a pleasant little tête à tête in her charmingly arranged apartment. Countess Pasolini called for me at 2 & took me in her motor car to leave cards on ladies who had called on me & then she took me back to my hotel. Sat quiet for a little & at 5 went to a tea room on the bocca Leone to tea with the Franquevilles & then Sophy & I walked to Hotel Russie to see old Mr Cartwright whom I had last met at Carlsbad. We sat with him for some time– He is very keen about home politics & old as he is bestirred himself greatly over the last elections & managed to get 4 Unionists brought in in Oxfordshire. I had visits from Mme Latour & Marchesa Capelli. Dined at 7.30 with the Franquevilles & left Rome by 9.10 train for Venice.
