22 April 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 22nd [April 1910]. I got up for breakfast downstairs at 9 as I expected Sir Rennell Rodd from Rome to stay with me & he came by the night train which got him here while we were at breakfast, Mme Langenbach, Alexandra & I. Then the whole party went out & I busied myself at home. Heard that Mr Rolfe was very ill & made all arrangements by telephone to have him taken to the hospital. What a curious irony of fate it is that this strange man who has tormented me & the people of the hospital with abusive letters & post cards should now have come to us as a pauper & almost dying! After lunch we sat some time talking to Sir Rennell in the Belvedere. He is very agreeable—is a short man with a young face, kind eyes & white hair. At 4 I took Mrs Langenbach & the Vivians to a party at Mara Sacripante where was a large party & dancing. The Duca degli Abruzzi came there & was introduced to me. He said he had met me before in 1902. I told him I did not think so but that I had known him before that as I was at Madrid when he was born—he laughed & said he could not be expected to remember that– He has a bright expression & a twinkle in his eye wh is pleasing. As Alexa did not want to dance we left the party soon after 5 & went to join Sir Rennell in the Piazza where we had tea all together at Florians. Afterwards I took Mrs Langenbach for a row home by the Giudecca Canal– A lovely evening & she enjoyed it. The Marchese di San Giuliano & Sr Malagola came to dinner. I had met the former when he was Italian Ambr in London. He is now Minister for F.A. at Rome & has come for the opening of the Exhibition tomorrow. He is very lame from gout & seemed tired having only arrived at 2 today from Rome. He is agreeable—but does not look well—& drags one leg when he walks. Mrs Curtis brought Lady Melville, Miss Dundas & Mr Hoppin in the evening, Mr Price also came & Mr & Mrs Hillman. All left abt 11.
