21 April 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 21st [April 1910]. I went out in the morning in gondola with Lady Vivian paid Angela a visit & then to Piazza. Duke & Duchess Canevaro lunched with us. The Duke had been Minister for F.A. at Rome for a short time some years ago & is now a retired Admiral. He got his title from a brother who was Chilean Minister at Rome & was killed in a railway accident in France. They are Italians from near Genoa. Their father was said to have emigrated to Chile when he grew very rich. There he married & had 12 children—some of whom settled & the rest returned to Italy. At 4 we went out in gondola to S.S. Zanipolo & took a turn out of the Fondta Nuova—then back to the Piazza & had tea at Florians. Saw there M. [illegible word] who has such a beautiful collection of fine things at Paris. He promised to come to see us tomorrow. Vivians went to the Rossini to see “Rigoletto”. I remained with Mrs Langenbach but being very tired was glad to get to bed soon after 9.
