24 April 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 24th [April 1910]. The Vivians & Sir Rennell & I breakfasted at 9 & went to morning service after wh we went for a walk on the Piazza & I escaped to Hotel Victoria to see Angela Reinelt for a few minutes & arranged that she should come one day this week to lunch. Then met my party again in Piazza & went home. In the afternoon several people came to call viz. Sir Fairfax & Lady Cartwright. He is the most extraordinary looking man I ever saw—with a woodeny expressionless face & wide open prominent eyes. I am told that in Vienna where he is Ambassador he is nicknamed the Sphinx. Lady Cartwright is a handsome Italian a Chigi of Siena & her grandfather was an English Dean. She speaks English fluently with very little accent. Mr Drefus came & brought with him Mr Cassis French Ambr at Vienna, a tall rather bourgeois looking man with thick white hair. M. & Mme                also came & Mr Corbin a French Secy from the Embassy at Rome, Count Cittadella of Padua a tall rather imposing man with a long while beard divided into 2 points. The Hulton family, the Montalbas &c &c. They were all interested in seeing the pictures. Tea was served in the dining room & people remained on till after 6. We dined at 7.30 & before 9 Sir Rennell Rodd left & returned by the night train for Rome. The Vivians went out by moonlight & Mr Langenbach chatted till 12 when we went to bed.
