25 April 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 25th [April 1910]. St Mark’s Day. The Vivians went off early to see the Procession at St Mark’s. Mr Langenbach & I were at breakfast together when Miss Broderick joined to ask about having a Dr for her friend Lady Hilda Keppel who is unwell. Then suddenly Signor Luigi Cavenaghi was announced & I had to leave her. He is kind eno’ to see to any necessary repairs to the pictures in this house & so we went round them together & he pronounced them to be in satisfactory state. He lives at Milan & is at Venice for these fêtes for the Exhibition. He asked to have one picture down—the Sebastian del Pronibo wh hangs in the dining room & I had it taken off the wall. We were also joined by Sr & Sra Ugo Ogetti & later by Sr Conrado Ricci & his wife. Ricci was tremendously enthusiastic over the pictures especially the one by Savoldo & he held forth to us on their various merits & remained discoursing till near 12 oclock. Clara & Hilda Montalba were with us part of the time. In the midst of this Mrs Langenbach took leave of me & went to the station to leave by 11.45 train de luxe for Paris—so now my party is reduced to Lady & Miss Vivian. At 3.30 I went to see Angela Reinelt & she told me that daughter of Css Morosini had told her she was unable to pay the acct at our hospital for their governess who is there ill & asked Angela to lend her the money!!! The Morosini’s are very rich but pay no one & are well known– Angela offered to pay direct to me and so to try & shame such meanness. I went on to enquire after Hilda Keppel & found she is better & then to join the Vivian’s at Dss Canevaros where there was a musical party. A Sr Princesse on the violin, a (concertesta) & various amateurs. Amongst them the young son of Baron Franchetti who is still at Eton & who has great execution. His father plays splendidly & has the most wonderfully delicate touch. After dinner went out with Lady Vivian in closed gondola for a turn by moon light. Alexandra went out with the Whitaker party.
