26 April 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 26th [April 1910]. Had a quiet morning of which I was in need after the rush of the last days. After lunch Gino Franchetti came to see us. He is a funny boy—extraordinarily precocious for 19—very enthusiastic & fresh—clever & sensible. The Vivians went out at 2 with the Whitakers in their launch & he went with them. I went to see Angela. Was amazed to find that a certain Sr Bertolini who was introduced to me yesterday at the Canevaros is a very objectionable individual who is to be avoided & I had asked him to come to my at home tonight! Later on Sr Malagola coming to see me I asked his advice. He at once said that I could not possibly receive him. What was to be done? We selected to telephone him that “I did not receive tonight”. This we did. The Dss Canevaro came in the evening & asked what had happened as she had meant to bring him with her as he had dined with her! I said that as he had been divorced by a nice young woman who was a friend of mine (one of the Guggenheims) I could not risk their meeting & putting both in embarrassing position. In this way I am rid of him without offending the Duchess. I cannot understand her friendship with such a man! Had a large reception in the evening—mixture of English & Italian—very pleasant & animated.
