6 May 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 6th [May 1910]. In this morning papers there is a telegram saying that the King is ill and that his condition is serious & a bulletin was published signed by Laking & Reid saying he is suffering from bronchitis. This is indeed alarming. The illnesses of the King have been kept so secret that this bulletin means that he is in danger. I went over to the hospital at 3 to meet Mr Price to talk with our expatient Creighton about his future—as he can no longer remain there—but is destitute. At 4.30 went to join the girls at Mara Sacripante’s afternoon dance where was also the D. degli Abruzzi. Arranged with the officers I met there to invite the Italian squadron to my house on Tuesday next & to give a fête in their honor—but when I got home I had a visit from the Consul Zaccato saying he had alarming news by telegraph of the King’s health. I at once telegraphed to Lord Howe my sorrow at the news & asked for the last report.
