18 May 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 18th [May 1910]. Got up at ten better. Typed a great deal all day. Mr Montalba came in the morning to give me accounts & to talk over the memorial service here on Friday. At 4 went out in gondola with Mrs B. Johnson & met Betty & Elizabeth on the Piazza & gave them tea then went for a row in gondola & stopped in the Edens garden which is now a glory of roses—there were many people there amongst them Mr & Mrs Philip Somers Cocks. He is now Consul at Lisbon & has got married since last he was in Venice. After dinner all but the Pss & I went out in gondola– I find all my Italian household most disturbed on account of Halley’s comet which is supposed to be going to destroy the world with its tail this night. It is said that many people will spend the night on the Fondamenta Nuove whence the comet may be seen before sunrise—that they may see the catastrophe!
