30 May 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 30th [May 1910]. Betty Murray & Elizabeth Boyle left for Florence this morning at 9. Lady Margaret Rutherford retired to bed with a little attack of influenza. Helen B. Johnson went off to the Lido so I took out Evie Ancaster at 11 to Antiquity shops near to Piccoli & Moisé Dalla Torre & then we went on to the Piazza. The sun was very hot & we were glad to have the awning on the gondola. After lunch we got Dr Tommasini to see Lady Margaret. I went in gondola with Evie & Helen to call on Mr Curtis at Palazzo Barbaro & see her beautiful apartment. From there I walked home & the others went on visiting. I returned by 5 & found Syra Malagola with Ola at tea. Retired to my room for an hour rest. This is our first really hot day. At 10 arrived from Florence Bernadina Contessa de Benomar & her daughter Maria to stay with me. Bernadina née Aylton was one of my first friends at Madrid when I went there in 1869. She was then a pretty bright girl & I (then 25 & just married) used to chaperone her to parties. She afterwards married Merry del Val & he was made Spanish Minister at Berlin & after at Rome where he died. They had only this one child. Laura Aylton is alive at Rome (the other sister) but is of a serious turn & always lives in a convent.
