31 May 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 31st [May 1910]. We lunched at 12 and directly afterwards started off in a motor boat for Chioggia– Lady Ancaster, the 2 Benomars & Helen Johnson & I. Ola remained at home to see after Lady Margaret who was not well eno’ to accompany us. It was a lovely day & very hot. We took 2 hours to get there & on arriving walked thro’ the long broad street to the big church where we went in & sat a while, & on to the land gate which stands there reminding one that one is on terra firma & that this gate was part of the defence of the town. What also makes one realize that one is on the land is to see horses & carriages come into the town down the broad street to meet the steamer that comes from Venice. We went into a caffé & had refreshments & then started again for Venice getting home at 6 o’cl. Mrs Curtis dined with us & at my evening reception I had about 40 people—mostly English travellers passing thro’ & amongst them Sir Cosmo & Lady Duff Gordon—the latter got up in the heighth of the present hideous Directoire fashion—her skirts so scant & drawn in round the ankles that she could hardly walk. She has large dress maker establishments in London & New York under the name of “Lucile” & so wears the newest fashions. She really was a queer figure tonight.
