3 June 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 3rd [June 1910]. Went to our church at 10.30 to see a copy of a picture by Buonconsiglio wh it is proposed to put up at the East End in the now empty gilt frame. The original picture exists in S. Spirito on the Zattere & the Academy here intending to remove it to have it placed in the Gallery had this copy made. The church resisted its removal & going to law won their case– The copy was therefore useless but the parroco had passed it to the Gesuiti—& then placed it over an altar. We offered to buy it for our church—but the Academy said it could not be sold but that they were willing to place it “in deposito” with us. The Parroco had had the copy lengthened to fit its place—we have to have a large piece of it rolled back to fit our church. This was done today under the direction of Mr Horatio Brown—& Lady Radnor & she & I agreed to send the Parroco 200 lire “for the poor” as a small consolation for having to allow a picture to leave his church to be given to the heretics. I don’t think any of our English clergy would have liked to give any thing out of their church to the dissenters! It was a very hot morning & I was glad to be home at 12. Went out with Helen after tea a tour of the antiquity shops to buy for a friend of hers. Benomars in great agitation as they had lost a small hand bag containing money & railway tickets—but it turned up safely in the evening. Adl & Duchess Canevaro dined here & Princess Clary came later– They had all known the Benomars.
