6 June 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 6th [June 1910]. Worked at modelling all morning. After lunch went off to the hospital to arrange about placing a convalescent sailor & stopped at the Academia landing where Mr Price came to speak to me on the subject. Yesterday the man Creighton came to speak to me very discouraged & we have to settle work for him to do. Mrs Bulkeley Johnson left me today directly after luncheon for Vichy, after a visit of 3 weeks—she is agreeable & nice looking– On my return from the hospital I had a visit from Herr Jagow the present German Ambassador at Rome who had stayed with me 2 years ago with Da Laura Minghetti. He is very pleasant & we had a nice chat. He talked of the general regret at the death of our King & how the Kaiser had not been liked by him—also how unfortunate the Kaiser is in always putting his foot into it when he makes his little speeches—vide—his last remarks on peace! We agreed that the reason the Kaiser did not get on in England was that the King looked upon him as an Uncle more than as a Kaiser. Jagow promised to come tomorrow evening to my at home & bring his secy Prince Wied. Ola & I went to tea with Mr Whitaker & met a small party & then I went to see Mrs Merrick at the Hotel d’Europa charming old Americans who have lived here for some years & then I joined Ola in the Piazza & we walked home together. A delightful quiet evening sitting in the Belvedere at work. It was cool & nice.
