7 June 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 7th [June 1910]. Lunched both of us with Mr Whitaker at Pal. Tiepoletto. On my return home had a visit from Lady Elliott wife of our Minister at Athens & 2 girls. She has poor health and wished to consult me about where in the Cadore she can go for change of air, but it must neither be too high nor too low air. I said we would consult Mrs Eden—so she is to come on Thursday & I will take her to the garden to talk to Carry. Walked out with Ola to see the Cinematograph performance the funeral of King Edward. It is a really wonderful thing—so true to life that the figures are really moving. The proprietor being an acquaintance of Mme Wiel gave the performance gratis to her & her friends– After the funeral there was “the Lion Tamers” wh was so real that it made one almost nervous to see the wild beast rushing about round the Tamer & his wife. When the King’s coffin comes in sight one feels as if one ought to stand up while it passes. Coming away from San Salvadore I met Css Iduna Belmondo who is only in Venice for a day & walked with her to Hotel Victoria to see Angela. From there I walked to call on Lady Radnor, but did not find her—& then on to Mrs Curtis who was in & so home. My usual reception—a good many English & American travellers came, the Clarys, Canevaro—Jagow &c &c. There is a report of a fresh disastrous earthquake in the South at Avellino near Naples.
