8 June 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 8th [June 1910]. Modelled & wrote letters. The gondola having gone to the squero for repairs I had to walk so after tea Ola & I went out to the Zattere where we took the ferry across to the Giudecca. At that hour it runs gratis for the benefit of the work people. Met Mr Montalba going over to the hospital and he accompanied us– We went to the Eden’s garden which is now full of white Madonna lilies in stately array on each side of the walks. It was hot & sultry & a storm threatened & came on later in the evening but little rain fell. The earthquake seems to have made about 50 victims & the K. & Queen went off at once to visit the place & make arrangements. The papers announced that a silver medal had been conferred on me for the little work I did last year for the refugees from Messina. It is very civil of the authorities but an exaggeration—for I was able to do so little.
