15 June 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 15th [June 1910]. All these days I work at correcting the proofs for my mothers’ ceramic Journals—they are mostly the times when she & Mr Schreiber visited us in Spain & Turkey & bring back old memories of my life—which now almost seem as if they had not been mine! but make me sad—tho’ thankful for having had such a happy life. Mrs Stainer came to see me in the afternoon—lately widowed, we spoke of the difficulty for a foreigner getting on in society here—the women jealous & unfriendly—their men disrespectful to women, & idle– Every body accepting all they can get & doing nothing in return. It seems that society here improves but slowly. When afterwards I went to call on Bss Reinelt & met there Css Morosini I had an experience of bad breeding in her impertinent manner to me—so much so that I left hurriedly so as to avoid more unpleasantness. In the Piazza I met H. Whitaker & he took me for a run in his motor boat out towards San Andrea & the end of the Lido & back. Ola went to see the blessing of the new bells at the foot of the new Campanile by the Patriarch at wh the D. degli Albuzzi was present. The bells are to be now hoisted to their places.
