16 June 1910 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 16th June [1910]. I went out in the morning to see Bss Reinelt & home to lunch. After that I went off in gondola to the Civil Hospital to see Baroness Mayneri who 2 days ago had a slight operation for a cîst on her neck. Found her in a nice clean room—quite comfortable only rather hot as it was on a terrace wh reflected the sun on the outside walls. I sat a few minutes with the Baroness & then went off to find a poor old woman who usually lives close by my house & whom I heard had fallen & broken her leg. She looked clean & comfortable & was delighted & surprised to see me—as no Italians visit at a hospital as we do in England. A “sister” showed me into the sala– There were common paid nurses—& one who had a white cap on her head—a sort of copy of what is to be seen at our hospital but the cap was not very clean & her dress otherwise not tidy. On leaving the hospital of S.S. Zanipolo I went off to S. Manrigio to see Avv. Franco to ask him to find out whether the house next the Cosmopolitan Hospital might now be bought. The proprietor last year brought an action against me as he said we had built the new ward 5 centimeters too near to him. This suit he has lost—& I hope he may now be willing to sell it. I want the ground for improving the hospital. Avv. Franco promises to find out about this. I went to Hotel Italie to fetch Marchesa Cappelli & took her over to see the hospital. Found that the American girl (Courtland) who had been so long ill of typhoid was just dead. We went off to the Eden’s garden & sat there some time. Very pleasant & flowers delightful. Mr & Mrs Pierce dined with us—& Ola took them out in gondola to see the arrival of the King of Italy at 10.30. There were a few Bengal lights on the canal—but nothing else. He does not like much ceremony.
